PostHeaderIcon Catcher In The Rye J.D Salinger Dies

The legendary author whose book shocked a world he shunned has died at age 91 in New Hampshire. In a statement, the iconic author’s son said Salinger died of natural causes at his home. He had lived for decades in self-imposed isolation in a small, remote house in Cornish, N.H.

Catcher in the Rye was the first book I ever read through and through without stopping (except to eat and pee). I identified so strongly with Holden Caulfield that I began to question my place in the universe. I recommend all read this novel (if you haven’t all ready) and read it again if you have read it.

PostHeaderIcon Blood Pressure Reduction Study- MegaNatural BP

Approximately 40 percent of adults in the United States have metabolic syndrome. Considered a risk factor for both coronary artery disease and type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome is diagnosed when at least three of five conditions are present: abdominal obesity, insulin resistance (impaired glucose tolerance), low serum HDL, elevated serum triglycerides, and an elevated blood pressure.

A study published in the July 16th issue of Metabolism Clinical and Experimental (www.metabolismjournal.com) indicates that the use of MegaNatural BP® grape seed extract in conjunction with lifestyle modification may effectively lower blood pressure in patients with metabolic syndrome. Patients with metabolic syndrome are also encouraged to increase their exercise levels, lose weight, eat more healthfully and stop smoking.

Representatives of MegaNatural BP will be available to discuss the study at SupplySide West, which takes place November 11-13 in Las Vegas. They will be in Booth #15015.

The placebo controlled trial was undertaken with 24 subjects with metabolic syndrome that documented the  lowering effect of MegaNatural BP grape seed extract.

Grape-Seed-Extract-95-OPC Two dosage levels (150 mg/day and 300 mg/day) and a placebo were given to three groups of eight patients respectively. After one month of treatment, there was a significant reduction in blood pressure in both groups given MegaNatural BP. There was no change in the group given the placebo. Also, subjects given 300 mg of MegaNatural BP had a significant decrease in the concentration of oxidized LDL in plasma.

“This new study results suggest that MegaNatural BP, with its strong anti-oxidant activity and favorable effects on blood pressure, could be of value in a lifestyle management program directed towards people suffering from metabolic syndrome,” says Dr. Anil Shrikhande, President of Polyphenolics.

PostHeaderIcon Space Tourist Guy Laliberte

Cirque du soleil founder Guy Laliberte’s dream was to see the world. I bet he never thought he would be seeing it from outer space.

Laliberte, a Russian cosmonaut and an American astronaut blasted off into space Wednesday morning aboard a Soyuz spacecraft headed for the International Space Station. Laliberte is Canada’s first space tourist on the space station. This is the latest milestone in a life where adventure has been the norm.

imagesHe is known for throwing wild parties, rubbing shoulders with stars, including actor Robert De Niro and director Francis Ford Coppola.

He was recognized by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Forbes magazine estimates Laliberte has a net worth of $2.5 billion by spreading the tentacles of the Cirque de Soleil around the globe.

“He’s the kind of guy that is never happy with a normal life,” says Daniel Lamarre, a longtime friend of Laliberte and the Cirque’s president and CEO.

“He is an amazing entrepreneur always provoking people to go to their limits. This a good illustration of that. He’s also pushing his team to try the crazy idea of having a show coming from the space station.”

Laliberte, the father of five children is engaged to be married to his current fiancee, was born in Quebec City. He started out as a teenage fire-eater. He’s also been a stilt walker, a musician and a magician.

It was the magic he worked with a rag-tag bunch of street performers  to create the Cirque du soleil in 1984. That got him noticed in a really big way.

He reinvented the circus and made people laugh at the same time.

The 50-year-old Laliberte doesn’t like to do the day to day of the business. That’s why he is doing what he is doing, because he wants to keep his focus on the creative content.

Guy  amazing businessman, the one place where he excels is creative content and international development. Those two things still keep him stimulated.

Laliberte’s s space mission as “surreal,” the CEO  Lamarre says the $35-million trip isn’t just a billionaire’s whim or a new way to torque a Cirque show. Lamarre says it illustrates another side to his high-stakes recreational poker player.

images2Laliberte will be promoting his One Drop Foundation during a broadcast on Oct. 9, seeking to raise awareness of the threat to global water supplies.

The Cirque kicked off its 1988 debut in New York with a benefit for homeless people.

One per cent of the organization’s box-office take goes to social causes. You can imagine, one per cent of our box office represents millions of dollars.

Laliberte has been driven all his life by two things – creating unique artistic content and helping change the world, even in little ways such as helping villages in Honduras and Nicaragua get clean water.

Furthermore, he doesn’t blink in the face of risk, whether it’s negotiating with Ringo Starr and Yoko Ono for a Beatles-themed Cirque show or climbing into a space-bound rocket.

PostHeaderIcon Functional Foods And Neutraceuticals

Consumers are increasingly interested in the health benefits of foods and have begun to look beyond the basic nutritional benefits of food to the disease prevention and health enhancing compounds contained in many foods. This combined with a more widespread understanding of how diet affects disease, health-care costs and an aging population have created a market for functional foods and natural health products.

Functional foods and nutraceuticals provide an opportunity to improve the health of Canadians, reduce health care costs and support economic development in rural communities. They also offer a way for some producers to diversify their agriculture and marine-based crops. According to market statistics, the global functional food and nutraceutical market is growing at a rate that is outpacing the traditional processed food market.

PostHeaderIcon Diabetes Affecting Sex Life

A study of U.S., British and German diabetes patients found 44 percent say the disease affects their ability or desire to have sex, researchers said. The study, conducted online among 2,000 patients with type 2 diabetes, investigated patients’ attitudes, feelings, health status, drug treatment programs and needs for coping with life with diabetes. The study, conducted by The Research Partnership, said most people say they feel in control of their condition but 43 percent report that they are sometimes or often unsuccessful in managing their condition.

In all countries investigated, one in two people say they feel that diabetes has an impact on their general mood. However, men are significantly more likely to feel calm and confident, while women are more likely to feel challenged, frustrated or tired. More than half of patients are also receiving treatment for high blood pressure and high cholesterol and the majority are overweight. The vast majority of the study subjects in Britain and the United States are clinically obese and around one-third from all countries never engage in any physical exercise, the study said. On the whole, patients enjoy a good relationship with their doctor but one-fifth — particularly the case in the United States — say they sometimes feel their doctor is annoyed with them for not managing their diabetes.

PostHeaderIcon Necessity Giving Rise to Those 50 and Older Becoming Self-Employed

There has always been risk involved with starting your own business, becoming self-employed.  That risk is higher among those over 50, as their “prime income earning” years are waning.  However, with the slowdown in the economy, more and more baby boomers are seriously considering striking out on their own and starting their own businesses.

3

A recent study found that 21% of all workers who change careers after the age of 51 choose to become self-employed.  The term being applied to the current trend, involving older workers being laid-off due to downsizing and other factors, is “necessity entrepreneurship.”

It may be surprising to learn that, according to a another study, over the past decade more people between the ages of 55 and 64 started web-based businesses that those between 20 and 34.  This trend is expected to continue.

While necessity is the mother of invention, necessity is also the potential mother of financial independence.  More and more baby boomers, those born between 1946 and 1964, are taking a more serious look at the possibilities of self-employment.

Baby boomers bring vast experience into a business.  Many of them have developed skills and expertise, which until now, have been used primarily to profit others.  Duke Professor Vivek Wadhwa, who studies entrepreneurs, says, “The more experience you have, the more likely you are going to be successful.  The average entrepreneur starts a company because they want to build wealth.  They are tired of working for other people, and they have ideas.”

Most business decisions can be boiled down to a simple “risk versus reward.”  It parallels that the greater the risk, the greater the reward.  The fact is that the Internet has made it possible to start a home-based business with a minimal investment.  As well, a web-based business can be located anywhere.

While more and more of the 50 and over crowd seriously consider their career options, many may feel that they have waited too long and that opportunity has passed them by.  In the age of the Internet, nothing could be further from the truth.  In particular, with the advent of social sites such as MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter, (often referred to as Web 2.0), social marketing possibilities are boundless.  Not surprising, the fastest growing segment on these social sites is baby boomers.

Thanks to the Internet and the ability it provides to connect with people all over the world, opportunity abounds.  Information – the very information that many baby boomers possess because of their experiences – have never been in greater demand.

Becoming self-employed takes effort, but that is not a barrier.  A strong work ethic is a common trait of those over 50.  Generally, work is not this issue.  The biggest question is simply, “How do I become self-employed?

Again, the Internet may provide the answer.  It has never been easier to obtain information, to learn new things.  Most community colleges now offer business and finance classes online, and many colleges and universities make it possible to earn a degree without ever leaving home.

There is also an abundance of free Internet training, especially pertaining to web-based businesses.  It is possible to learn everything one needs to know to set-up and run a profitable online business from the kitchen table.

However one decides to pursue their goals, it is clear that there have never been more affordable resources than right now.  Instead of worrying about when the economy might rebound, the time may be right act on that long-held and pent up desire to be the boss.  Now may be the best time , and seriously look at self-employment as an alternative to working for someone else.  In many ways, the time has never been better.

Necessity is once again proving a mighty force for change.

Tom Lane has been a sales executive and business owner for the past thirty-five years. He grew his most recent business, a sales agency, from $3 million in sales to over $15 million in four years.

He now invests his time helping others, primarily Baby Boomers, to learn how to use Internet marketing to enrich their lives. Much of the information Tom uses to teach “attraction marketing” principles is from The Renegade University, a free Internet resource.

Tom’s blog, The Branded Boomer provides useful Internet marketing tips and resources for Baby Boomers.

Thanks for the info Tom!
